To work as an RN in Washington you license with the Washington State Board of Nursing (formerly the Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission) through the HELMS portal: US$138 for a single-state licence or US$203 for a multistate licence. Your program director sends an electronic certificate of completion, the Board emails approval to register with Pearson VUE, and complete files are processed in about seven business days. Washington joined the compact on January 31, 2024.

How long it takes
Apply about two weeks before your program completion date.
Upload documents within 14 days of applying; closure 60 days after the last document.
Complete applications processed in about 7 business days.
Paper licence mailed 7 to 10 business days after issuance.
Retake after 45 days; after four fails, a prep course is mandatory (from Jan 30, 2026).
Renew annually, up to 90 days before your birthday.
Mistakes that cost people time or money
Do not pay for fingerprints unless the Board emails you; most Washington applicants never need them.
If you live in Washington, the US$203 multistate licence from day one is cheaper than upgrading later.
Ask your program director when the electronic certificate of completion goes out; nothing moves until it arrives.
Four fails triggers a paid prep course requirement; treat the third attempt as the one to prepare hardest for.
Questions people ask about Washington
How do I register for the NCLEX in Washington?
Apply in the HELMS portal about two weeks before you finish (US$138 single-state or US$203 multistate), upload your documents within 14 days and have your program director send the electronic certificate of completion. The Board emails approval to register with Pearson VUE (US$200), and Pearson VUE emails the Authorization to Test.
How much does a Washington RN licence cost?
US$138 for a single-state licence or US$203 for a multistate licence, US$200 to Pearson VUE, and US$33 (US$36 from October 2026) plus the printing fee only if the Board asks for FBI fingerprints. Renewal is US$138 or US$158 a year.
Can I work in Washington before I pass the NCLEX-RN?
Not on an exam application: the free 180-day temporary practice permit is for applicants who have met every other requirement and are waiting for FBI fingerprint results, mainly nurses licensed elsewhere.
Is Washington a compact state?
Yes, since January 31, 2024. Nurses whose primary state of residence is Washington can apply for the multistate licence (US$203); if you move to another compact state you must apply there within 60 days.
How many times can I take the NCLEX-RN in Washington?
There is no cap, but since January 30, 2026 an applicant who fails four times must complete a Board-approved NCLEX preparation course (Kaplan, ATI or Hurst) before testing again. Pearson VUE requires 45 days between attempts.
Who is exempt from the English test in Washington?
Nurses educated in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada (except Québec programs) and the listed US territories. Everyone else educated outside the US takes TOEFL iBT, IELTS, OET, MET or CELBAN at the Board's minimums.
